The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a series of islands located near the meeting point of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. With 572 islands, 37 of which are inhabited, they are one of India's seven union territories. The Andaman Sea, roughly 150 kilometres (93 miles) north of Aceh, Indonesia, separates the province from Thailand and Myanmar. The 150-kilometer-long Ten Degree Channel (on the 10°N parallel) separates the Andaman Islands (partly) and the Nicobar Islands (wholly), with the Andamans to the north and the Nicobars to the south (or by 179 km). The territory's capital is the city of Port Blair. The total land area of these islands is roughly 8,249 km2 (3,185 sq mi). The islands are home to the Andaman and Nicobar Command, the Indian Armed Forces' sole tri-service geographical command.
